iMess

Support

iMess is a private, self-hosted messaging service. This page is where the help links in the apps lead. It covers the questions those links ask about.

Inbound email is not currently monitored. The addresses on this page are published for completeness, but if you need an answer, use whatever channel the operator of this iMess deployment gave you when your account was created.

What this service is

This is an independent, self-hosted messaging service, run by the operator of this iMess deployment. Your account exists only on this server. It does not connect to any other separate backend, so you can only message other people with an account here.

Because it is self-hosted, it is not covered by any upstream vendor's support. Their help centre describes their own service, which has different features and different people behind it — that is why these links come here instead.

I forgot my password

Use the Forgot password link on the sign-in screen, or go straight to https://imess.click/doc/auth/#/forgotpassword. Enter your email address and you will be sent a reset link.

If no email arrives, check that you used the address you registered with. Mail from this server can take a few minutes.

Devices and verification

Every device you sign in from gets its own encryption keys and appears in your device list. Check that list occasionally and remove anything you do not recognise — removing a device revokes its access straight away.

Each device has a fingerprint. Comparing fingerprints with the person you are talking to — in person, or over a channel you already trust — is how you confirm nobody has interposed themselves. The apps show you when a conversation gains a new device, and that is worth paying attention to.

Messages, files and history

Message content is end-to-end encrypted. This server stores ciphertext it cannot read, so nobody here can recover your messages for you if you lose access to all your devices.

Messages stay until you or another participant deletes them. When you add a new device, it starts from that point — it cannot decrypt history it has no keys for. Use the backup feature in the app if you need history to survive a device change.

The app cannot use my camera or microphone

That is an operating-system permission, not a server setting. Grant the app camera and microphone access in your device's privacy settings, then restart the app. On desktop browsers, check the permission icon in the address bar.

Calling

Voice and video calling is not available on this deployment yet. The relay servers that carry call media are not deployed, so calls will fail to connect. This is a known gap, not a fault with your client.

Changing your email address

Change it in the app under account settings. A confirmation message is sent to the new address, and the change takes effect once you follow the link in it.

Deleting your account

Account settings has a delete option. Deleting removes your account from this server.

Messages you already sent stay on the devices of the people who received them. End-to-end encryption means the operator has no way to reach into someone else's device to remove them.

Reporting abuse

Report misuse of this service to misuse@imess.click. Include the handle or email of the account involved and roughly when it happened.

Because message content is end-to-end encrypted, the operator cannot read the messages you are reporting. Say what happened in your report rather than assuming it can be looked up.
